How to test and evaluate the strength performance of corrugated cardboard?

Publish Time: 2025-02-24
As an important part of modern logistics packaging, the strength performance of corrugated cardboard is directly related to the transportation safety and packaging effect of the product. In order to ensure the quality of corrugated cardboard and meet the needs of various application scenarios, it is particularly important to conduct scientific strength performance testing and evaluation on it.

The strength performance test of corrugated cardboard mainly includes edge compression strength test, burst strength test, puncture strength test and folding resistance test. These test items evaluate the compressive capacity, toughness and durability of corrugated cardboard from different angles.

The edge compression strength test is a key indicator to measure the ability of corrugated cardboard to withstand pressure parallel to the corrugated direction. Through the edge compression strength tester, vertical pressure is applied to the corrugated cardboard until the cardboard breaks or deforms, thereby measuring its edge compression strength. The higher the edge compression strength, the more pressure the carton can withstand during stacking and transportation, and it is not easy to deform and damage.

The burst strength test is to check the maximum vertical pressure that the corrugated cardboard can withstand per unit area. This test helps determine the load-bearing capacity of cartons under extreme conditions such as rough handling. The bursting strength tester measures the bursting strength of corrugated cardboard by applying pressure to it through a rubber diaphragm until it breaks.

The puncture strength test focuses on evaluating the ability of corrugated cardboard to resist puncture by sharp objects. Using a puncture strength tester, the maximum force required is measured by applying a puncture force at a constant speed until the cardboard is punctured. Higher puncture strength means that the carton can better resist puncture by sharp objects and reduce damage caused by accidental punctures during transportation.

The folding test evaluates the durability of corrugated cardboard under repeated folding. Use a folding tester to perform repeated folding tests until the cardboard cracks or breaks, and record the number of folds. This test helps understand the durability of the carton during multiple folding and unfolding.

When conducting these tests, it is necessary to follow relevant standards and specifications, such as GB/T 6546-2018 "Determination of edge compression strength of corrugated cardboard". These standards have detailed provisions in terms of sample size, test speed, test equipment accuracy, etc. to ensure the accuracy and comparability of test results.

In summary, the strength performance test and evaluation of corrugated cardboard is a scientific and rigorous process. Through these test items, we can fully understand the strength performance of corrugated cardboard and provide reliable data support for packaging design and quality control.
